The Cost of Siding For A House in 2012

As a siding contractor the question we are most commonly asked is how much does it cost to install new siding on a home?  As you can imagine the range of costs can vary significantly based on a number of factors.  Our siding calculator is an excellent way to get an estimated range for siding installation, but I’ll also attempt to shed some light on the subject in this article.

Several factors are taken into consideration when a siding installer is putting together a quote. Essentially the installer has to answer a series of questions in order to accurately estimate the cost of the project, and as the homeowner you should be involved in answering most of those questions.  The questions are as follows.

What type of siding and trim are being installed?
What’s the square footage of the exterior wall surface?
Are the windows and doors being encased in trim?
Is the old siding being removed and disposed of?
How difficult is the installation?

These questions are all relevant to developing an accurate siding quote and based on the responses your home may fall somewhere in the diagram below.  The horizontal axis is a measurement of the project size and difficultly.  The vertical axis shows how using more expensive products can increase the cost of new siding.

Another factor that affects the cost of a siding installation project is the region you live in. Material and labor costs can vary from state to state.
