There is a certain allure to a log cabin that evokes memories of an earlier and simpler time. For those interested in cedar log siding as the preferred construction material of a new home, the process need not be complicated. Cedar log siding can be acquired in a modular configuration that makes for an easy assembly. This enables the homeowner, now homebuilder, to assemble their own log cabin with minimal effort and minimal skills. This “do-it-yourself” type of project can also be left to a professional, should the homeowner not feel comfortable with the process.
Speaking of that process, the procedure for assembling the cedar log siding is straightforward, thanks to the modular design of the materials. The logs connect to one another in a criss-cross fashion that seems obvious to the eye. Besides improving on the protection of the cabin from weather and environmental concerns, the construction removes the need for heavy equipment to handle the logs, which are generally of either Western Red cedar or Incense cedar.
A number of tools are needed for the construction, none of which are exotic or difficult to operate. For example, an air compressor will be needed in order to power an air-nail gun or stapler (this can also be rented from some hardware store locations), and a skill saw and miter or chop saw is also on the equipment list. The other necessary tools − tape measure and bevel, among others − can be acquired from a hardware store with ease.
The walls and gable areas will need to be measured and square feet calculated. Then the number of log ends will be figured into the equation and the walls prepared − be that for new construction or remodeling jobs. Installation of trim will also need to be taken care of; this occurs after the walls have been prepared, and handles such areas as vents, light fixtures and electrical outlets. Of course window and door trimming is also a requirement, as is the actual installation of the siding and caulking. Following the instructions, which are straightforward, will ensure a job well done. Patience will ensure that the process moves at a smooth and reasonable pace, even if this is going on over old siding that has not been removed.
The end result is the creation of what appears to the eye to be a solid log cabin − one that can be created over an existing cabin should one desire instead of starting from scratch.

My sister and brother-in-law built a log home. They purchased a “kit’ that was essentially a giant puzzle almost exactly like the Lincoln Logs we used to play with as kids. It was quite a process, but came out great in the end. I know they’ve dealt with some settling over time, but in general I think they are happy with their choice.
