Not everyone who would like to remodel their house knows about fascia, soffits, soffit panel, and soffit trim. The internet is a good source of information regarding this. However, what it provides can still be confusing, particularly for the novice who is in the dark about such things.
Fascia
There are boards on the outer walls of a house or building called fascia. These serve as a point of attachment for various external elements like drainpipes and gutters. As such, they generally run along the structure’s edges. They can also accentuate the design and color of the sidings or roof shingles.
Soffits
There are undersides that need to be covered in any house or building. These may be the portion beneath the overhang of the roof, the underside of a staircase, or the bottom portion of an arch. Soffits are used to cover these and to improve the way they look. The boards used are called soffit panels or fascia boards, if they are located on the outside of the house. They are either manufactured as solid or perforated depending on their use.
They serve purposes such as keeping out pests from these structures and controlling the circulation of air in the roof. In winter, if they are designed well, they can help keep the temperature of the entire roof area even. This will prevent the formation ice dams which can lead to the early deterioration of the roof or walls.
Soffit trim
Fabricated vinyl or aluminum strips are used to make installing and removing soffit panels easier. Soffit panels are slid between two of these strips positioned across each other. These strips are called the soffit trim. There are different trim styles to fit the various exterior siding and roof designs. These designs may also be used indoors.
Some of the more common styles in use are the J-trim, H-trim, and F-trim. These indicate the how the portions of the trim, which boards are slid through, look like. Others are named after the design but also where they are to be placed. For instance, “fluted corner post” and “beaded corner post” gives one both an idea of the design and where these go.
Remodeling And Maintenance
Fascia and soffits add beauty to a house. In the case of soffits, they can easily be replaced to match exterior remodeling. Installing them is rather easy and can be done by the owners themselves. However, they usually do not outlast other exterior elements like sidings and shingles.
Checking them regularly is thus important. If the house sidings or shingles are to be cleaned, it would be a good idea to clean them as well. No fancy cleaning implement is needed – just water, dishwashing detergent, and bleach. This will keep them looking bright and clean.
